Medieval Love Celebrated; No Casualties

The Barony of Winter's Gate, Oertha--Something was in the air, and yes, it was love in the Barony of Winter’s Gate during the cold month of February.  The populace held a Heart’s Revel in which the two sides of medieval love, the beautiful and the bawdy, were celebrated by members from around the Principality.

Many people from the Principality of Oertha travelled the wintry roads including Alienor, Princess of Oertha, as well as the baronage of both Eskalya and Selviergard.  The hall was filled with many people who traveled far to spend time with family and friends in the Barony of Winter’s Gate and celebrate love.

Upon entering the hall there was a surprise for many; musicians were ready to play a variety of dance music for the assembled populace.   Truly a delight to behold and listen to; these travelers brought with them a variety of musical instruments which many people gathered around to not only listen to and dance but to take part in with instruments of their own.

The first half of the event was devoted to the beautiful and the populace was entertained with a variety of competitions that exemplified this side of Medieval love.  There was a competition for finger foods, odes to courtly love, tokens of love, as well as the baronial whims of edible tarts and period jewelry based on medieval manuscripts.

The finger food competition was won by Mistress Magdalina Georg'eva Oshitkovna Ochakovicha with an amazing tasty treat that disappeared quickly.  The Best Ode was won by both Mistress Lilla æt Sceaphylle and Lord Rin McCray who serenaded their loved ones with grand words and made the object of their love blush and smile. The Best Token of Love was entered by Mistress Margery Garret, Sir Culan mac Cianain, and Yamano Yuki-san who won the competition with a braid of her own hair cut at the event.  The Tarts competition was won by Mistress Morgana yr Oerfa with Tiarna Brann mac Finnchad coming in a close second.  The Baroness’ Whim of period jewelry was won by Sir Culan mac Cianain with an amazing entry showcasing both outstanding artistic ability.

A court was held in the middle of the event in which Baron Braun of Winter’s Gate welcomed all to the cold lands of his Barony and acknowledge the visitors who travelled far.  In his court, Baron Braun bestowed the Silver Swan, an award for excellence in the arts and sciences, to Natasha and Nicolle Minnerly and Nick of Winter’s Gate—the musicians who performed and entertained those with great desire to dance.

Princess Alienor also had business in court in which she recognized several individuals of her northern-most barony.  Lady Talorc Caer Arienrhold was honored with the Diamond Willow for her abilities in the Arts and Sciences and Astrid of Winter’s Gate was honored with the Order of the Orion for her skill in Archery.  Additionally in court, Princess Alienor took fealty and homage from the populace that wished to do so.

There was a break for dinner in which many people stayed to enjoy each the others company.  The dinner break also served to distinctly delineate the different activities and allow those with children to take them home in preparation for a more adult themed evening.

The last half of the event was devoted to the bawdy—and this part of the event was rated “parental guidance very much suggested”.  Again, competitions were offered to entertain the populace which included aphrodisiacs, Medieval pick-up lines, and bawdy love tokens.

The Aphrodisiac competition was won by Lady Cassandra of Winter’s Gate who entered red-wine treats which were wonderfully delicious and quite a delight.  The Medieval Pick-up lines were presented to Baron Halfdan of Selviergard and judged by the populace.  This competition was entered by Baroness Clare Elana of Eskalya, Master Khevron Oktavii Tikhikovich Vorotnikov, Mistress Sapphira the Navigator, Lord Rin McCray, and Lord Hans Schaffer.  While many of the competitors were probably thrown into confusion with a Baron being the subject of the contest; all did a spectacularly wonderful job in making Baron Halfdan blush and laugh out loud.  In the end it was Mistress Sapphira who won by countering many of the pickup lines with her own witty humor.

The final competition, that of bawdy love tokes was won by Lady Talorc Caer Arienrhold who entered the competition with an interesting braided rope of which its use will be left to the gentle reader’s imagination.

The end of the event, late in the evening, saw many people with smiles and laughter as another wonderful event was enjoyed by all in attendance.  The autocrat, Mistress Margery Garret and her co-Autocrat, Baroness Elisheva bint Sitt al-Sirr, put on a memorable event—one that will undoubtedly be talked about for many years to come.
