Spring Welcomed in Selviergard

The Barony of Selviergard, Oertha--The Barony of Selviergard, Oertha—Traditionally the welcoming of Spring in the lands of Oertha has always been the domain of the Selviergardians.  It was the ancient Trolls, the forefathers of the Selviergardians, who welcomed in the warmth of the sun with dancing, fighting, bardics and obnoxious fabric choices at the first camping event of the season.

Modern Selviergardians did quite well honoring their ancestors this year.

While there were no heavy fighters available; it was the archery and rapier activities that took the day not only providing entertainment for those in attendance but showcasing rousing display of prowess on the field for all to see.  For those who did not participate in the activities, or those just taking a break to enjoy the weather; the pavilion was filled with laughter and cheer as many people visited with each other and enjoyed the day working on small projects or just talking.

The archery was attended by many and included Prince Søren among the crowd who took advantage of the large space provided on site to have fun with the bow and to shoot a few arrows.  The target was stuck many times and the ample room and position of the field made it easy to retrieve any stray arrows that managed to miss the target.  There was laughter and cheer as participants each had many turns taking aim at the target and testing their skill.

Afterwards was held a display by the Rapier community in many different styles of combat.  The three fighters: Donna Étaín O’Rowarke, Tiarna Brann mac Finnchad, and Lady Angela of Eskalya, had fun crossing blades with liveliness and flair to the cheering of the gathered crowd who watched them.

After the rapier display, a court was held in which Baron Halfdan of Selviergard welcomed the Prince and Princess of Oertha, Søren and Alienor, as well as Baroness Cynehild of Eskalya and thanked them for attending—adding that the day was made much brighter with them in attendance.  From there, the Baron of Selviergard welcomed all who were able to attend the yearly Selviergardian celebration of Springtime.  There were also some visitors, Stephan and Lurana along with their son, were visiting from lands far off but had been Oerthans many years before.  Baron Halfdan also thanked them with Selviergard coins minted from when the group first became a barony as well as a personal token.

Additionally in court; the Prince and Princess of Oertha had a new law read in which they proclaimed that those who taught should be recognized with an award of their own.  Lastly, Baroness Cynehild of Eskalya had business before Their Highnesses in which Duke Skygge Newcombe was elevated to the position of the Seneschal of the Barony of Eskalya.

From there, the Baron of Selviergard invited one and all to feast.

The food was brought out, pot-luck style, in which many delights were laid out with gusto for those in attendance to sample and, in many if not all cases, devour wholeheartedly.  While there were few tables to be had; the situation allowed the populace to gather around together to enjoy each the others company that much more.  Feast is always a fun and interesting time especially when different people end up feasting next to people they don’t normally get to do so with.  Stories and laughter ruled the evening at feast.

Afterwards a bardic was held.  With our special guests, Stephan and Lurana, we sung many different songs.  From the well known, such as “The Old Dun Cow,” “Arafel’s Lament,” and “The Bold Marauder,” to songs not sung in many years such as “Waltzing With Bears.”  We were even treated to a new song for those in attendance called “The Horse Tamer’s Daughter” as well as a wonderful story involving a selkie and a lost fisherman.  It was a delight to see so many people attend and have fun in a memorable bardic the likes of which have not been seen in quite some time.

The day came to an end as people went either back to their own homes or to their tents.  The night was still a bit cold, but bearable as the memories of grand stories and lifting songs left pleasant and warm dreams for those who dared to camp in the crisp spring weather.

The next day brought a short business meeting for the Barony of Selviergard.  Business was discussed with the gathered few and then it was time to break down the camp before the rainstorms moved in quickly.

Baron Halfdan noted in his closing missive a couple of days later after the event that “it was a wonderful time to spend with friends and family alike as we celebrated the Spring season in Selviergardian style.”  Indeed, Spring has been welcomed and well met in these lands.
