Selviergard’s Yule Celebration

The Barony of Selviergard, Oertha--The Yule season is an important part of Selviergardian tradition. Not only is it a time to visit with family and friends in a warm hall, but it is also a time to remember when two groups joined together to form the Barony of Selviergard so many years ago. This year's Yule celebration, hosted by Viscountess Dagmar the Red, was no exception and was a wonderful way to enjoy the holidays in Selviergardian style…for the fun of it!

Gentles from all over the Principality of Oertha came together to enjoy each other's company, sample the fine food, and of course, to witness a fun tournament. Her Highness, Princess Isabella, and Her Excellency, Baroness Elspeth of Eskalya were also in attendance, adding to the holiday cheer.

After a brief opening court with Baron Halfdan in which his Excellency welcomed all; the main activity prepared to move outside. Fighters, both heavy and rapier, readied themselves for the tournament. Even though the weather was cold many people came out, bundled in warm winter cloaks and hats, to watch the skill and accuracy of the fighters. At the end of the Round Robin tournaments it was Donna Étaín O'Rowarke who won the Rapier Tournament while the Warlord of Selviergard, Viscount Fergus mac Thomais, won the Heavy Tournament.

After the tournaments it was once again time to enjoy the warm hall with family and friends. As is customary during the holiday season: gifts were exchanged between guests and the sound of laughter filled the hall as friendships were renewed and created. Feast was a wonderful activity with a good portion being provided by the Barony. Celebrants brought food items to share as well which ensured that there was plenty to eat for everybody…another Selviergardian tradition.

In the final court of the day Baron Halfdan welcomed several newcomers who were in attendance with a gift of a coin of the realm. In addition to words from the Autocrat and from the Baron himself; the officers were presented with gifts for their services to the Barony of Selviergard. Additional gifts were the children in attendance helping to add to the holiday cheer. Last, but not least, Yuki of Selviergard was recognized for her artistic endeavors by the Baron and admitted into the Companions of the Or Claymore, an honor that recognizes artistic ability in Selviergard. Yuki of Selviergard was also recognized by Princess Isabella and presented with an Award of Arms.

The event was spectacular and full of cheer; the exact way that a celebration of the season should be.
